Disneyland: Prototype Of The Ideal City?
[ send me this paper ]
12 pages in length. Imagine a community with no crime, no disrepair, no unhappy residents, where there is always a sense of contentment and camaraderie floating in the air. Every citizen upholds neighborhood aesthetics under obligation of town code, and each person maintains a defined responsibility in preserving this Utopian setting. This community is not a democracy, but residents do not seem to mind that their every decision is founded upon autocracy. Is this the description of yet another backward European country? No, this is the setting for one of the world's most beloved communities where everything appears perfectly Utopian: Disneyland. No individuality, no originality, no independence. Bibliography lists 12 sources.

Dr. Kafka's Colony

3 pages in length. Unlike the world he left behind, the colony Dr. Kafka dreamed of does not rely upon or revolve around technology; in fact, the primary component of this colony's long-proven survival is how its people have eschewed technological advancement in exchange for harkening back to when humanity lived a much more simple and humane existence. George Orwell's '1984': Pertinence To Today's Society
[ send me this paper ]
6 pages in length. Perhaps George Orwell's prophetic novel about a totalitarian existence was merely a result of the author's overactive imagination. Maybe, however, it was a warning. Orwell, himself, said he did not believe such a society as he describes in '1984' would ever arrive; however, he did believe that something resembling it most definitely could. What is made crystal clear is that when human beings are put to the test -- truly dissected to the core -- there is no room for any concern for anyone other than themselves. Humanity is selfish and power hungry, which the novel illustrates ever so clearly. As is with all life forms, those who demand power are the ones who very often receive it. This mentality is what Orwell envisioned for the entire world -- a world in which the government could see and hear everything, where a person could never be alone, and his or her most personal information would be instantly available to all who requested it. One can only hope that the Orwellian, thought-controlled future is one that remains firmly in the clutches of fantasy. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

HOCHSCHILD AND THE REALITY OF THE AMERICAN DREAM

This 3-page paper argues Hochschild's contention that the American Dream is available only to a fortunate few and because of that, it's flawed.
